These days, there are a number of high-tech materials and designs available to keep you warm during the coldest outings. Here's a short list of things to keep in mind when you're shopping for a bag:pstrongfont color=CC6600Buy for Cold/font/strongbr It's a safe bet that on at least one of your adventures, the nighttime temperature will drop unexpectedly. That's why it's smart to buy a bag that's rated for the lowest possible temperature you expect to face on your camping and backpacking trips. For summer trips, a bag rated at +35 degrees or higher will likely do the trick. If you like to camp in higher elevations in the summer, or if spring and fall outings are in your future, consider bags rated from +10 to +35. Winter adventurers should look for bags in the -10 to +10 range, while those on serious winter alpine climbs and expeditions will want a bag rated lower than -10.p Keep in mind that sleeping bag manufacturers' temperature ratings only estimate the minimum temperature at which the bag will provide warmth. Take these numbers with a grain of salt, as different folks generate different amounts of heat when they sleep. If you're the type who likes to pile on the covers even on warmer nights, go for a bag that's rated ten degrees colder. The opposite is true for "warm" sleepers--a 35-degree bag will probably work for you on a 25-degree night.pstrongfont color=CC6600Goose or No Goose?/font/strongbr The most important component of any sleeping bag is its insulating material. Modern sleeping bags offer two choices: goose down or synthetic. While both materials have advantages and disadvantages, down bags are considered superior because of their phenomenal warmth-to-weight and warmth-to-bulk ratios. While providing great insulation, down is extremely compressible and light. There's a reason why geese can fly iand/i stay warm through the winter! Down also boasts great long-term durability and will typically retain its insulating properties after years of use.p All of that said, there are many high-quality synthetic bags on the market and synthetic materials are getting better all the time. While a synthetic bag will weigh somewhat more than a down bag at an equivalent temperature rating, synthetic bags perform better when wet. (Yes, the Achilles heel of down is that it loses all insulating properties when wet.) If your trips take you to wet climates, you may want to consider a synthetic bag for this reason alone. Keep in mind, too, that many people are allergic to down--synthetic bags are non-allergenic. Finally, down is considerably more expensive than synthetic, which might tip the balance for adventurers on a budget.pstrongfont color=CC6600Bags for All Shapes/font/strongbr Sleeping bags come in two basic shapes that reflect their intended use. Mummy-shaped bags offer the best warmth because they conform to the body's contours. This minimizes the amount of body heat the body must put out to maintain a constant temperature. Many mummy bags are offered in women-specific shapes and sizes, as well. Rectangular bags, while they do offer more room to toss and turn, are less thermally efficient because they contain more open air space. Also, they are typically heavier than mummy bags, and are generally not offered with down insulation, making them best suited for car camping or short backpacking trips.pstrongfont color=CC6600Pad Yourself/font/strongbr No matter what kind of bag you choose, a sleeping pad is a required accessory. Coleman Red Canyon 17-Foot by 10-Foot 8-Person Modified Dome Tent CustomerReview

We just survived the night in this tent during the worst storm and flash flood we’ve ever been through. 11 inches of rain in 5 hours! The inside of the tent stayed dry the whole night despite the high winds and torrential rains for 5 straight hours. Eventually the tent collapsed when a wall of flood water pushed in one side of the tent. We got out ok, but when we went back to the tent after the storm, found that only a tiny amount of water had gotten into the tent even after the flood collapsed the tent, and all of our possessions we had abandoned inside had remained dry. After that experience, I can highly recommend this tent!

Coleman Tent Light Specifications

A great addition to any camping trip, the Coleman tent light will keep your tent illuminated during the evening hours. The light attaches to your tent poles easily and securely via the built-in magnet, so you needn’t worry about damaging your tent fabric. The light’s powerful, replaceable Krypton bulb, meanwhile, offers plenty of light for reading, playing games, or chatting. Best of all, the light–which operates on four AA batteries (sold separately)–won’t get in your way while you sleep or hang out, unlike standard lanterns. Made in China, the light includes an easy on/off switch.pbAbout Coleman/bbr The Coleman Company has been creating and innovating products for recreational outdoor use since W.C. Coleman Tent Light CustomerReview

We have been using this light for close to ten years now. Using it only for car camping anyway, since it is a bit too heavy for backpacking – we like to travel light. It is not showing any signs of wear so far. It is not an extremely bright light, but it is not dim. It is plenty bright to use for general night time tent stuff, like setting up your bedding, getting the kids settled in, etc. Because it is not a modern type of LED light the batteries don’t last as long, but when we bought this there were no LED lights available. br /br /The older technology is the only reason I am giving it 4 stars. When we purchased this light there was really nothing else on the market similar to it and the magnet fastener was a great new idea. So now, if we were to be looking for a tent light, we would look at some of the newer, brighter, more efficient LED type tent lights. The only drawback to those is that they tend to project most of their light in a straight line, i.e. they don’t diffuse the light well. This Coleman light does diffuse very well; it spreads fairly equal lighting all around itself making a very pleasant environment. Would we buy it again? Maybe, but the LED tent lights are probably a better deal.

Coleman Tent Kit Specifications

The Coleman tent kit comes with everything you need to set up and break down your tent. The kit starts with four sturdy 10-inch steel tent stakes, which keep your tent from blowing away in the middle of the night. The solid rubber mallet, meanwhile, makes it easy to pound the stakes into the ground, so you don’t have to search fruitlessly for a nearby rock. When it’s time to pack up, you can turn to the easy-to-use tent stake puller, which keeps your fingers from cramping up. And no one wants to bring the campsite home, which is why the kit includes a handy whisk broom/dust pan combo for cleaning the tent floor. A must-have for frequent campers, the tent comes with a handy mesh storage bag.pbAbout Coleman/bbr The Coleman Company has been creating and innovating products for recreational outdoor use since W.C. Coleman started selling gasoline-powered lanterns in 1900. Coleman Tent Kit CustomerReview

This tent kit has the basics. The stakes and the mallet are sturdy, and the stakes come with rubber tips to keep them from doing any damage when they’re not in use. The stake puller is ergonomically shaped, and will work well in sandy areas. If the stakes are really stuck, it will pull out of shape. The whisk broom and dust pan are a nice addition, however they’re hard to get back in the mesh bag because the strands of the broom get caught in the mesh. I agree with Mike’s suggestion in his review- keep the plastic bag they come in because that will make the process much easier.

This was my second experience with tents, the first one when me and my wife bought a 2 person tent which was very cheap from Thailand but when we took it to real adventure it didn’t satisfy our needs. We then decided to go for brand new one and we were welling to invest some money on that. We finally after few surches online decided to go for Coleamn tents which was great “but expensive” experience, very large, easy to setup, and light for short backpacking trips.br /I do recommend this tent for you if you are going for short trips and on Mediterranean climate.br /br /(The reviewer was compensated for posting this review. Coleman Hooligan 2 Backpacking Tent CustomerReview

One of the first things that struck me when I was considering this tent was the great reviews, and maybe more importantly the absence of any bad ones. Even the good products usually have a least a one or two bad comments, but this tent didn’t. So I bought one and now I know why. Right out of the box I could tell by the quality of construction and design that it would be a great tent. Having said that, it doesn’t seem really necessary for me to add anything to what others have said about this tent, except to echo their reviews. I love this tent and can’t find anything wrong with it other than getting better stakes (I recommend the MSR Groundhog… there a bit pricey but worth the cost). I use the tent for motorcycle camping and can’t imagine a better choice. I’m one of those people that likes to spend time in my tent having coffee and reading, especially when the days are short, cold, and rainy, and for just myself the tent feels very roomy and comfortable. I can set up my gear around me within reach… stove, coffee pot, snacks, lantern, etc…. and it’s very cozy and “homey”. As others have said, it might be a bit heavy for backpacking, but it’s perfect for motorcycle camping. I would absolutely recommend this (and have) to others.
