Panasonic VIERA U1 Series TC-P42U1 42-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV CustomerReview

I recently graduated back in May, with an A.S. in Broadcast production and was looking for a good solid TV for entertainment, but also for work as well.br /br /I wanted a larger TV as well, because i’m visually impaired, so anything lower then 32″ is uncomfortable to watch from a distance, even 32″ can be pushing it from a distance.br /br /Anyway, I didn’t have a large budget to work with just the money I got back from the school left over from the pell grant. I went to best buy and I had intended to buy a 42 or 46 LCD but after talking to the sales person he recommended plasma as it’s much more true to life reproduction of color and contrast. I”m not new to display technologies, i’m just fairly new to flat panels and HD. I am someone who is used to looking at a CRT. Until HD was born, they were the best display to reproduce content in it’s entirety.br /br /This was the ONLY 1080p plasma TV best buy had in stock at the time, it fit the budget the size is almost too big for the studio apt i live in. 42″ is actually just perfect for the living room. any bigger would have been overkill. This TV was purchased February 24th, 2010, so I’m reviewing it after several months of use.br /br /Now for the review of this TV:br /First of all, out of the box, this TV needs to be Calibrated for best performance, The standard setting is way too dim, also the color is slightly unbalanced, milage may vary depending on your set. After I calibrated the set, which included both tweaking user menu and service menu settings the picture is fantastic. I have no complaints over color, contrast or black levels now. Black is black white is white, and other colors are reproduced very nicely. I will make a note here, the content source also makes a very big difference as to how the TV display looks, not all sources are equal. For example, if you have an old source (SD) the colors can be way off, or it’s otherwise distorted and looks horrible, or you may have an SD source that looks great, same with HD, it comes down to how was the video processed before you got it how well was the source preserved (older content) is your display properly calibrated, etc. One more note on this topic, HD displays tend to bring out content defects more as they are designed to show detail. Problem is the detail isn’t something the viewer always wants to see.br /br /Other parts of this TV review include, a good choice of inputs 3HDMI, 2 composite, 2component 1 s-video noVGA, but i use a dvi to hdmi adapter if i want to connect the laptop, which works extremely well.br /br /For best reproduction of HD content use HD size 2 in the settings this turns off overscan so your content is displayed without being cropped off.br /After almost 4 months of use, I had the stock power board go out in this unit, I had it repaired under warranty with no problems. I’ve been using it just about 3 months now since the repair and the set has worked beautifully. The repair was done on july 14th, 2010, it’s now October 24th, 2010. Early failure doesn’t change my review or view of products, as long as the warranty is honored. Working with electronics, you just learn to expect the unexpected. I did however make some changes to my setup, I took the single power strip i was using for the TV, blu-ray player, etc and stuck it through my ups on the surge protection only side as it has a very good line conditioner and noise filter and a few other things for protection against spikes and other power issues.br /br /Overall, I’m quite satisfied with the purchase. Many people like the s series and G series and V Series of plasmas. But really don’t need the G series i have the blu-ray for vieracast, also i’ve heard the other models with exception of the s series either doesn’t have the smaller model sizes or they’re hard to find. As far as the AR filter that’s a moot point for me, the tv isn’t facing any windows and it’s as simple as keeping the lights off during tv watching. When it comes to 3D i’m still not comfortable with investing in a 3D tv until i’m sure the 3d effect won’t aggravate seizure activity in someone who has a history. So in closing this TV seems to be the perfect fit for a living room TV in a small apartment.

Panasonic VIERA X1 Series TC-P42X1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV CustomerReview

I waited 10.5 months to offer as accurate a review as I can. This is the first HD TV that I purchased and am I gald I did. Before I made my purchase on Amazon last July, I read as much as I can from Consumer Reports to CNET to random internet blogs and of course Amazon feedbacks. Because I had a limited budget I wanted the most for my buck, so I went to Plasma instead of LCD last year. I wanted a reliable TV and go with a reputable manufacturer that has been in the TV business, that helped me eliminate Vizio, Samsung, LG etc. br /br /The HD quality is great. I purchased a HDMI cord from Amazon instead of wasting my money on a version at the local retailer. I love the rectangular stand on this set. My parents have the older version with 2 perpendicular “feet.” This is much better looking and even a little easier to install. The remote is easy to use, although I rarely use it since everything is available on the cable box remote. br /br /Although this TV only has 2 HDMI inputs, you can solve that by using the 4-5 HDMI inputs that a receiver has. br /br /I do have 1 complaint that kept me from giving this set a 5-Star rating: Glare. This is extremely noticeable at my last house where I placed this set in the corner and hence, it was positioned 45 degrees towards my windows. Bad decision, but that was the way my living room was designed. With my current house, I have the TV against a wall and the problem is 90% solved. But this can be a big distraction. br /br /Overall, it is a reliable, beautiful, quality HD TV at an affordable price.

Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-P42S1 42-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV CustomerReview

I have had this 42″ Panasonic Viera Plasma TV for nearly four month’s now; I upgraded from a 21″ Panasonic CRT. This is a really great TV at a reasonable price. I chose plasma because they got great reviews and seem to have less issues with backlighting and were a bit cheaper than current generation LED/LCD’s. I opted for the S version over the X version because I don’t have broadband. We get 20 odd channels over the air with an antenna, PBS which has a lot of HD programming comes in beautifully. We joined Netflix about the same time and have really been enjoying the home theatre experience. My TV room is narrow less than 12′ so I made cardboard cutouts while deciding between the 42″ and the 46″, in hind sight I could have gone with the 46″. I was worried a 46″ from 7 feet away would be too big or grainy, the fact is you could be 12″ away with HD before it starts to pixilate, and the picture is so good, bigger is better once you experience the feel of home theatre. I added the Blu-ray DVD player, have yet to try a Blu-ray disc, but we’re ready for them. I already had an Onkyo 7.1 surround sound receiver, added a motley collection of speakers, a pair of old KLH’s, some home built rear and recently added a BIC 12″ sub woofer, now we can get all the sound effects and deep base we can handle. I used the HDMI connections for the Onkyo, Blu-ray and TV; these are a must to get the HD experience. Needed the composite hook up for a somewhat antiquated VCR, and a digital optical input for the best sound from the Home Theatre Amp. The message here is DON’T FORGET TO ORDER CABLES ALONG WITH THE TV. The sound out of the TV itself is OK, not horrible but far from a surround sound experience. I have never adjusted any of the picture settings, colors are rich and accurate, occasionally a bit dark but this can be adjusted by opting for the theatre experience which enhances the picture abit. Controls and adjustments both on the TV and the Onkyo require studying the manuals and carefully selecting from multi-layer menus. Not always clear what you want or how to get it, since we don’t do this everyday, adjustments require revisiting the manual. Once you are happy with what you have great, still need 3 remotes, haven’t been successful using any one as a universal though all claim it’s possible. Overall a huge upgrade from the old TV, enjoying it!

Panasonic VIERA C1 Series TC-P42C1 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV CustomerReview

I am comparing this tv with a 1920×1080p lcd (60 hz) from lg. I bought this plasma and am very pleased it. The videos/tv broadcast is better than the lcd. There is some pixelation during fast moving HD scenes IE football games but it’s better than the lcd. On the lcd it was very difficult to find a sweet spot on picture settings. This panasonic makes picture adjustment very simple and finding a good setting is very easy. The hdtv tuner seems to have some issue with finding one of my local channels even though the subchannel for that station is coming in fine. It acutally finds all the other channels better than either my hdtv tuner card or the lg lcd tv but this one channel is giving me problems. This was not a problem on the lg lcd using the same antenna. If you use cable/sat this shouldn’t be an issue for you. I’ve also tested a PC connected via hdmi and the lg lcd is far superior for that than this model. There seems to be flickering on bright white screens and of course 1920×1080 is far better than 1024×768. This model has no vga connection. Finding a resolution that fits into the 1024×768 16:9 format is very difficult. I couldn’t get a full screen to fit in the tv’s display using the hdmi hdmi connection. I tried every resolution imaginable. I imagine a dvi hdmi cord will end up with the same results.br /If you have a western digital media player it looks awesome on this tv using hdmi and the 720p setting. On the lcd tv it looked very disappointing on the 1080 setting. I recorded hdtv using a tv tuner and played back the .tp .ts files and they look awesome. The panasonic can’t read the CC signal from those .tp .ts recordings and neither can the western digital. I have since found out that you can rip the CC information from the .tp .ts files and extract them to .srt format which the WD media player can read and display.

Appearance: The T.V is very aesthetically pleasing. It has a superb black glossy finish.br /br /Ease of Use: The T.V is very easy to use, especially the Viera Cast. You can also figure out the T.V if you so chose to do, without reading the owners manual, although, I would still suggest reading up. br /br /Picture quality: So far the picture quality is amazing, I have read forums claiming that the black levels “brighten” after sometime. We shall see. br /br /Sound Quality: The speakers could be better, but who uses just the T.V speakers now a days anyway? br /br /Other thoughts: 42 inch T.V is a perfect size for me. Also the T.V sits very firmly in the stand (you actually have to screw it in)br /br /
